Richard Butler

Richard is an instructor for the BC Forest safety Council, CAGC, and Western Arborist Association. He has felled timber on the coast of Vancouver island for the last 35 years averaging 210 days a year. He has worked as a Supervisor in the Seismic sector of Alberta and BC during the winter for the past 11 years.
A Qualified Supervisor Trainer (QST), Richard began his falling career in 1979 in a small logging camp north of Campbell River. He was trained by a very strict faller, who vigorously followed WorkSafe BC regulations. These same standards are employed today in the logging industry.
As a contractor, Richard has 45 years of experience falling, with no serious injuries to date.  Certified by Worksafe BC in 2003, he has been a QST since then, enabling him to train and certify 600+ fallers over the past 18 years. In 2004 he returned to school to become a certified new faller and chainsaw trainer. Since then he has supervised and audited crews in the seismic oil and gas industry, mining and forestry sector.

Richard’s Mission

When I was asked by Worksafe BC in 2004 to help certify the fallers of BC, I noticed a wide range of skills and practices in the Forest Industry, both good and bad. Since then I have been committed to mentoring and training fallers to help them become as skilled as possible in order to make the industry safer.
